Materials for collage, painting, and sumi-e will be available; donations will be accepted for their use. | Saturday, April 12, 11:30 am to 3:30 pm | Picnic and garden tour ginko at Tilden Botanic Garden at Berkeley.Gather at the Visitor Center. (to the left of the Main Gate, at the intersection of Wildcat Canyon and South Park Drive.) Easiest parking is in the parking lot across from the Garden on Wildcat Canyon Drive. Directions are here. David Sherertz will be our docent for a garden ginko with writing and sharing time. Lawn picnic potluck lunch first, bring blanket or low chair. (no peanuts please). Sponsored by YTHS, Poetry Center San Jose, and San Jose Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services. 10:00 am to noon – Garden walking tour and haiku workshop. 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm–Featured readers are Peggy Heinrich, Santa Cruz; Bruce Feingold, Berkeley; Don Baird, LA; and Linda Papanicoloau, Stanford. Their readings will be followed by an open-microphone haiku reading. Light refreshments will be available. |

Featuring a beautiful natural setting with the opportunity to learn from a noted haiku poet and, and other experienced poets and artists. The retreat’s theme will be birds in nature and art. It is a tradition of this annual party that the poets exchange a holiday card haiga with the other poets. Thirty copies of the haiga card are likely to be enough for the exchange. Write-up. |
2014 Event Write-ups
DECEMBER 2014 HOLIDAY PARTY
It was an evening of haiku friendship. The holiday dinner was at the home of Alison Woolpert, our YTHS President. As she expressed through her words:
Luminarias outside, holiday lights inside, and a living room filled with the lively talk among friends (Patricia & Al Machmiller, Judith & Lou Schallberger, Joan Zimmerman and friends from Japan Miki and Shun Kamata, Eleanor Carolyn, Carol Steele, Carolyn Fitz, Jean Mahoney, Patrick Gallagher, Sandy Vrooman, Roger Abe, Ann Bendixen, Kae Bendixen, Amy Ostenso Kennedy, Phillip Kennedy, and Alan Leavitt). Candles and Carol’s Ikebana centerpiece decorated the dining room table, a table laden with delicious potluck offerings. We feasted, and then shared our haiku/haiga cards.
To sum it all up in J. Zimmerman’s words: “It was filled with Joy.” Write-up by Mimi Ahern.
NOVEMBER 2014 ASILOMAR RETREAT
“It was for the birds!”… and for all the 33 birder haiku poets (new and veteran) who gathered for the YTHS Retreat at Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove, CA.
