2014 Yuki Teikei Haiku Society Retreat
Asilomar State Beach and Conference Center, Pacific Grove, CA
Thursday Nov 6 – Sunday Nov 9, 2014
Each year the Yuki Teikei Haiku Society holds a haiku retreat at Asilomar in the beautiful natural setting of Monterey Bay on the Pacific Ocean. It is a great opportunity for poetry writing in an environment of coastal forest and dune vegetation populated with shore birds and other land and sea creatures. Asilomar, noted for its Arts & Crafts architecture by Julia Morgan, is located on the Monterey Peninsula, known for its historical and literary heritage.
The theme of this year’s retreat will be “All About Birds.” We’ll start our adventure by scouting for our fine feathered friends at one of the premier bird watching sites in the western US, Elkhorn Slough. There an expert birder/teacher will educate us about the birds living in the local coastal zone, with a review on bird identification and understanding bird behavior. Later she will lead us on a field trip at Asilomar with binoculars and scope in hand.
The featured presenters at the conference will be water-color Artist Floy Zittin, calligrapher Martha Dahlen and poet Patricia J. Machmiller, all who were collaborators of the publication Sweet Reverence of Little Birds. We’ll learn the haiga-related arts of making simple sketches of seasonal birds depicting a variety of attitudes and moods; heightening our awareness to the influence of typefaces on our poems; the placement of haiku on our sketches; and to tune our ear to birdsong, and to incorporate bird sounds into our haiku. All this with a schedule theta includes renku-writing and poetry sharing, and that still leaves time for reflection and the appreciation of nature. We hope you will join us!
