2017 Yuki Teikei Haiku Society Annual Retreat
Asilomar State Beach and Conference Center, Pacific Grove, CA
November 10 – 13, 2017 (Friday – Monday)
Each year the Yuki Teikei Haiku Society hosts a long weekend haiku poetry retreat at Asilomar Conference Center, located along a dramatic section of the Monterey California coastline. The retreat is designed to inspire and nurture the creative spirit of haiku poets from near and far. Guest speakers will offer insight into the process of writing haiku. And the program is designed to allow ample time for attendees to wander and write in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Opportunities are also available for poets to share their work and participate in group writing collaborations.
Our featured guest speaker this year will be John Stevenson. He is a haiku poet, Japanese literature scholar, past president of the Haiku Society of America, former editor of Frogpond, and current managing editor of The Heron’s Nest. John is a founding member of the Route 9 Haiku Group (Upstate Dim Sum). He was one of the organizers of Haiku North America 2015, at Union College, Schenectady, New York. Here are three of John’s favorite haiku:
Colonel Mustard fireflies last pieces in the library... beyond of a jigsaw puzzle... winter night the sarcasm filling in the skies
Other special presentations at this retreat will include: a traditional Kukai (a Japanese haiku contest); haiga presentations; a dress-up renku party; announcement of the winners of the 2017 Tokutomi Haiku Contest; and presentation of the 2017 YTHS Anthology.
We are very excited John Stevenson has accepted our invitation to join us this year. We hope to see many of our haiku friends there.
